How do I determine the right lamp shade size?
In most cases, the lamp shade should be roughly twice the width of the lamp base. The height of the shade should be about half the height of the base. All of our table lamps come with matching lamp shades.
What are the lamp shade attachment types?
There are three main types of lamp shade attachments, also known as fitters:
- Spider Fitter: also known as a washer fitter, is the most common for table lamps. It consists of a simple ring which can be placed on a harp and secured with a finial.
- Uno Fitter: this attaches directly onto the threaded lamp socket instead of the harp.
- Clip-On Fitter: this attaches directly onto the bulb itself, typically used for sconces and chandeliers.
What types of lamp shades are there?
Most lamp shades can be characterized by their structure and shape.
Structure
- Hardback: these are rigid, shaped by a laminated liner.
- Softback: these are made by stretching fabric over an internal wire frame, which are typically more expensive.
Shape
- Drum: a round shade with straight sides, for a fairly contemporary look.
- Empire: a round shade with tapered sides, for a more traditional look.
- Square & Rectangular: characterized by straight lines for a modern look.
- Oval: a specialty shade for unique lamps, often tapered.
